One of the perks of living in a house and having a backyard is the possibility of owning a pool. But what if you weren’t lucky to get a house that already has a pool? Is it worth it to build a new one? If you have a good plan and a professional team working for you, we think it is.

But before doing anything, you’ll have to inform yourself about how long it takes to build a pool and everything you need to know about the swimming pool construction timeline.

We’ll talk about the pool building process timeline and advise how to prepare yourself for this big project.

How Long Does It Take to Build a Pool

Building a new pool is not an easy job, and therefore it can’t be done in a few days. The pool building process timeline can depend on many factors and vary from project to project. You have to prepare yourself for it as it can be sometimes overwhelming and lengthy. But the final results are always worth it. So, how long does it take to build a pool?

The average inground pool building process can last from 8 to 12 weeks. It may sound like an extended period, but Rome wasn’t built in a day. Good things take time, and you don’t want to rush the process if you want an excellent final result.

It’s easier to wait if you know what a pool-building process timeline looks like, and we are going to help you with that. If you decide you want one in your backyard, this is everything you need to know about the pool building process timeline.

Phase One: The Design Process – 1 to 4 weeks

Before the construction starts, you need to decide on the design of your future pool. This phase varies significantly from project to project and from client to client. The whole process can last from one week to four weeks, sometimes even longer. The creative phase is the most important for you as a client because it’s all about your wishes during this time. You’ll be working with a pool designer that will try to make your dreams come true. Today there are many options on what a swimming pool can look like, and there are a lot of details you’ll have to choose from here. This process can last more than four weeks due to detail-tweaking. We advise you to take your time and don’t rush with the design because it’s a significant investment for something that will be a part of your property for a long time. And you don’t want to get yourself in a situation where you don’t like the layout you chose after only a year or two. Of course, sometimes, if you have an exact picture in your mind, this process can be done in just a week. You are the decision-maker, so everything depends on you.

Phase Two: Consult with an Engineer – 1 to 2 weeks

Once you have the final design, the next step is to consult an engineer and seek approval. An engineer will review all aspects of the design plan and all of the safety features. It’s an essential step towards your dream pool, as you want a good-looking and structurally solid plan.

Phase Three: Permits – 2 to 5 weeks

You’ll need to have a permit for the inground pool building. This process can sometimes last up to six weeks, but it also can be done in less than two weeks. Because of something like this, it’s not easy to give an exact answer to how long it takes to build a pool. It all depends on your local government, but it’s also vital to have a good design plan that an engineer verified. Due to that, you’ll want to hire a team of well-experienced professionals to make your design plan and verify it. If you have an impregnable plan without any flaws, you’ll effortlessly get all the permits.

Phase Four: The Excavation Process – 1 to 2 weeks

The actual inground pool building process starts when you get all the necessary permits and the excavation starts. This is an easy part of the job, and it doesn’t require a lot of time. The digging process is fast; however, it can be delayed due to many unexpected circumstances. The weather is a significant factor contributing to the delay and some unforeseen obstructions and issues found during digging.

Phase Five: Steel, Plumbing, and Electrical Installations – 1 to 2 weeks

Once the excavation process is complete, the next step is to put the steel, plumbing, and electrical installations. The duration of this process depends on the final design of your pool and its size. All of the water features, underwater speakers, lightning, and spa features need to be considered during this process.

Phase Six: Gunite, Vinyl, or Fiberglass – 1 to 4 weeks

This is another phase that depends on your swimming pool design and the material you have chosen. Gunite pools take a lot more time to finish as they are made out of concrete, and they need time to fasten. On the other hand, if you decide on a pool made out of vinyl or fiberglass, everything will be done way quicker, and you’ll have a pool in about a week.

Phase Seven: Plastering – 1 to 2 weeks

The final step in an inground pool building process is the plastering step. It is done once the concrete is fully cured and dried. It’s a finishing touch that will make your pool last long and look incredible.

Phase Eight: Optional Custom Features – 1 to 4 weeks

Now that you have your dream pool, you have an option to do some custom features, but it’s not something you have to do. If you want to do it, you can add a customized deck with different amenities or work on landscaping to make your backyard look beautiful. This is also when your water, spa, lighting, and sound system features will be installed if you had them planned. Depending on the amount of work, you can finish everything in a week, or it can be prolonged up to a month.
